When should fluoride toothpastes be used in children?

The time to start using fluoride toothpaste in children depends on the child's age and dental health. Expert organizations such as the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry make the following recommendations for the use of fluoride toothpastes:

  1. Between 0-3 Years of Age:  For children between 0-3 years of age, tooth brushing should start immediately after the babies erupt their teeth (when the first signs of teeth appear). For children in this age group, a rice grain-sized amount of non-fluoridated toothpaste should be used. This is important to prevent excessive fluoride intake.

  2. Between 3-6 Years:  From the age of 3, a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste can be used for children. It is important to help children brush their teeth. Since there is a risk of children in this age group swallowing the paste, excessive amounts of fluoride paste should not be used.

  3. Ages 6 and Above:  From the age of 6, children can use the amount of fluoride toothpaste used for adults (chickpea-sized). However, since children in this age group have a risk of swallowing the paste, it should not be used in excessive amounts.

An important point to remember is to prevent excessive fluoride intake when children swallow toothpaste. Therefore, care should be taken to prevent children from swallowing the toothpaste while brushing their teeth. It is also important to consider your dentist's recommendations.
